Rhyme and Reason is a reaction to research of common nursery rhymes and their origins. Many popular rhymes have dark pasts, and this book delves into that. Many know that "Three Blind Mice" originated from a plague, but many of the Mary rhymes originated from Bloody Mary, the queen who persecuted Protestants. In the past, it was illegal to gossip and the punishment was imprisonment or torture. The rhymes were the answer to this problem, allowing people to share stories through a code. The book is a 6 page carousel structure, involving 3 staggered etchings per illustration. The text is printed with letterpress. |
